In India and around the world, fields like international relations, political science, strategic studies, war studies, security & area studies, foreign policy, geopolitics and similar subjects are under-researched, with most work in these areas being conducted primarily by government organisations. The creator of this journal observed that much of the research published in this field was largely theoretical, often recycling insights from existing papers. Additionally, the creator noted that graduates lacked adequate research skills, and even those who were skilled had limited opportunities to publish, as other journals preferred established researchers and had lengthy publication processes. Consequently, graduates in this field struggled to find employment in private sectors such as OSINT (Open Source Intelligence) and risk management firms, which tended to prefer technical or MBA graduates for their industry-relevant knowledge.
Through LinkedIn, the creator of this journal discovered that graduates from neighbouring countries like Bangladesh and Pakistan, as well as from African countries such as Nigeria and other regions, face similar challenges. This revealed a significant gap in preparing graduates to transition from the classroom to real-world work environments. To bridge this gap, graduates in these fields need to acquire essential technical knowledge.
Just as mathematics and economics have practical counterparts—applied mathematics and econometrics, respectively—the creator of this journal envisioned that it was time for this discipline to expand with a practical approach and coined the idea of ʻapplied strategic studies,ʼ which would encompass technical knowledge relevant to defence and strategic matters. Thus, the Phadke Journal of Strategic Studies was born, emerging as a truly multidisciplinary journal and the first of its kind to advance a distinct branch (from existing framework) of ʻDefence and Strategic Studiesʻ. The journalʼs idea aims to integrate the existing framework of strategic studies with essential technical expertise to address and solve real- world defence and strategic challenges.
Phadke Journal of Strategic Studies aims to advance rigorous scholarship in international affairs by publishing peer-reviewed research papers, scholarly analysis and commentaries.
